Running through a gauntlet of opponents, the Waunakee boys’ tennis team went 6-0 last week, including going unbeaten at their own invitational on Saturday, April 27.

    Waunakee is now 15-3 overall.

It started with a 7-0 demolition of Fort Atkinson on Tuesday, April 23, as the Warriors’ four singles players — Nevan Lipari, Noah Sell, Levi Christian and Marc Fleissner — all won in straight sets, dropping only three games between them.

The doubles lineup was even more dominant, as the tandems of George Zimbric and Jaxon Wipperfurth, Owen Manley and Copeland Leitz, and Charlie and Louis Zimbric cruised in winning their matches. Together, the three teams lost only two games.

Against Beaver Dam, the Warriors again won 7-0, with all four singles players and all three doubles teams winning in straight sets.

The tightest matches occurred at No. 2 singles, where Sell outlasted Myles Nampel 7-5, 6-2, and No. 1 doubles, where Wipperfurth and George Zimbric fended off Riley Doyle and Christopher Braker 6-4, 7-5.

The Warriors had a tougher time against Monona Grove, but they emerged with a 4-3 victory on Thursday, April 25. They had to sweep all three doubles matches to do so, with Fleissner getting Waunakee’s lone singles win, downing Will Card 6-4, 6-3.

At No. 1 doubles, George Zimbric and Wipperfurth dispatched Lincoln Metcalfe and AJ Nelson 6-4, 6-1, while the Warriors’ No. 2 combination of Manley and Leitz won 6-2, 6-2 over Carson Kornstadt and Noah O’Brien, and Charlie and Louis Zimbric rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Waunakee InvitationalOn Saturday, the Warriors hosted their own invite, losing only two singles matches in three duals.

While all Waunakee singles players won in straight sets in a 7-0 win over Tomah, Sell faced a tough battle at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 7-5 over Collin Branch.

At No. 1 doubles, George Zimbric and Wipperfurth dropped the first set 2-6, but they rebounded to defeat Ashton Steele and Brodie Robertson by winning the next two sets 6-3, 10-8.

A 6-1 win over the Madison Country Day/Abundant Life Christian/Saint Ambrose was fueled by straight-set victories in all three doubles matches for Waunakee. Sell survived a tough three-setter at No. 2 singles, taking the match 6-3, 4-6, 12-10. Levi Christian and Mauro Gonzalez won in straight sets at Nos. 3 and 4 singles.

Finally, the Warriors powered past Oregon 6-1, as Lipari, Sell and Christian won in straight sets at Nos. 1-3 singles, while Waunakee’s usual doubles tandems also scored straight-set victories.
