    Boys lacrosse: Top-ranked Warriors dispatch Wausau, blow out Norskies

    Locked in at the No. 1 ranking in the state, according to Wisconsin High School Lax, the Waunakee boys’ lacrosse team just keeps on winning.

    The Warriors faced No. 9 ranked Wausau on Saturday on the road and emerged with an 8-2 victory, improving to 9-0 in the process.

    Seven players scored goals for Waunakee, led by Justin Sawicki’s two goals. Others finding the back of the net for the Warriors include Wade Bryan, Michael Mercuri, Brandon Sawicki, Charlie King, Gunnar McFadden and Cole Savola.

    Brandon Sawicki also notched an assist, while Bryan and Savola paced the team in ground balls with six apiece, as Jake Duren chipped in with four. Bryan also forced eight turnovers, with Duren, Sam Hogland and Savola totaled three forced turnovers apiece.

    In net, Nate Olsen made nine saves.

    Waunakee 16, DeForest 2Jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the first quarter on Tuesday, April 23, the Warriors kept the foot on the gas, outscoring the rival Norskies 9-1 the rest of the way. It was the second time this season that the Warriors beat DeForest by a 16-2 score.

    King and McFadden combined for seven goals, with King finishing with four and McFadden recording a hat trick. Taggert McKelvey chipped in with two goals, while Savola, Brandon Sawicki, Hogland, Ethan Evans, Alex Mikkelson, Justin Sawicki and Travis Jenson each had a goal.

    Evans, Isaac Margala and Justin Sawicki each dished out two assists, with Bryan, McKelvey and Mikkelson each notching an assist.

    Duren collected five ground balls, compared to Adrian Millin’s four and Calvin Behnke’s three. Savola and Behnke forced three turnovers apiece, while Logan Ehle had two forced two turnovers.

    Olsen made five saves to get the win.

    Waunakee 9, Sauk Prairie 1Smothering defense and a productive offense combined to carry the Waunakee boys’ lacrosse team to a win over Sauk Prairie on Monday, April 29.

    Charlie King led the way with four goals, while Alex Mikkelson had two and Taggart McKelvey, Justin Sawicki and Adrian Millin finished with a goal apiece.

    Millin won all nine of his faceoffs, while Sam Hogland, Brandon Sawicki and Justin Sawicki had assists, as did King and Mikkelson.

    Millin also scooped up a team-high six groundballs, while Wade Bryan and Logan Ehle finished with four apiece. Isaac Margala and Calvin Behnke each had two.

    Bryan paced the Warriors in forced turnovers, ending up with six. Behnke had four, Ehle collected three and Josh Truscott recorded two.

    Isaac Schultz stepped in as netminder and had five saves.
