Strong early results have the Waunakee boys’ golf team feeling good.

At the Maple Bluff Country Club Quad on Monday, April 15, the Warriors finished second as a team, three shots behind Milton.

Waunakee totaled a 314 competing against Milton, Edgewood and Madison Memorial. Milton took first with a 311. KC Nickel paced the Warriors, carding a 75 and taking third.

“Peyton Albers had his best round of the season and shot a stress-free 76 and finished in fourth place,” said Warrior head coach Betsy Zadra. “Brady Piazza shot 81 and took eighth place, and Drew Berres and AJ Ziegler tied for ninth place with 82. All five Waunakee golfers finished in the top ten overall … quite an accomplishment especially at a challenging course like The Bluff.”

Two days later, Waunakee finished third among 48 teams at the Sheboygan North Invitational, shooting a 314 on a rainy, windy day.

KC Nickel fired a 75 to lead Waunakee, while Peyton Albers shot 78, Brady Piazza had a 79, Drew Berres carded an 82 and freshman Quinn Stein finished with an 84.

Then, on Thursday, the Warriors competed at Whistling Straits on the Irish course.

“Waunakee shot an amazing 302 on the Irish Course and had the fourth best round of the day,” said Zadra.

“Drew was on fire Thursday shooting his personal best … a 1-under par 71 and tied for 28th overall in the two-day event. KC had an even-par round of 72 and finished the two-day event tied for eighth place among the 240-player field. Peyton shot a steady round of 74 and tied for 24th in the two-day event. Brady shot an 85 and AJ had a 90.”

Junior VarsityZadra reported that on Thursday, the JVA team played Middleton in an 18-hole dual meet at Pleasant View.

“It was played in a steady rain and the Waunakee team battled through in a close match,” said Zadra. “Middleton defeated Waunakee 329-333. Peter Wangerin was the medalist shooting an impressive 79 in the rainy conditions. Tyler Ripp also had a great round shooting an 80. Quinn Miller shot 86 and Landon Gallagher and freshman Quinn Kern both shot 88. Carter Allison completed the scoring with a 91.”

On Tuesday, the Waunakee Badger Large Mini Meet at Sixmile was canceled due to storms. This event will be rescheduled.
