The Waterloo track & field team continued to test itself last week by competing twice. First, the Pirates headed off to Poynette High School on Tuesday, April 23 for a Capitol Conference quad against Columbus and Wisconsin Heights in addition to the host Pumas. To follow, Waterloo made the trek to Pardeeville High School on Friday, April 26 to compete in the Bulldog Invitational.

Tuesday’s conference action yielded many second place finishes, but two Pirates did manage to nab first place. Junior Ryan Fugate was the champion in the boys pole vault with his winning height of 10 feet flat. Freshman Claire Blom also won the girls 300 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.31.

Three more of the boys’ better finishes also came in the field portion of the meet. Senior Benny Marshall took second in the long jump at 19’4” and junior Kameron Ring finished in the same spot in the triple jump at 39’6”. Sophomore Ben Ugorji also helped out by taking second in the pole vault with a height of nine and a half feet. Ugorji would also throw 119’1” in the discus for third place.

On the track, the boys got a nice runner-up finish in the 4x100 meter relay. Juniors Lane McCaw and Daniels Gomez Hidrogo teamed up with freshmen Kayden Bird and Jose Valle to put up a time of 49.27 seconds. Additionally, junior David Cefalu finished second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:17.55 and junior Owen Koele took third in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:06.59.

As for the girls, pole vault was also an important event for the Pirates. Senior Cordelia Webber placed second with a height of seven and a half feet while senior teammate Alisa Sheshina placed third at seven feet flat.

On the track, freshman Calla Schumann picked up an impressive second place finish in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 7:29.11. The girls also got third place finishes from their 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, and 4x800 meter relay teams.

The Pirates hoped to roll this conference success into a strong performance at Friday’s invitational at Pardeeville. Waterloo’s boys managed to nab 11th place of the 13 teams in attendance with a team score of 24.5. The girls finished last of the 13 teams with 10 team points. Abundant Life Christian was the boys champion with 122.5 points, followed by Randolph/Cambria-Friesland with 98.5 and host Pardeeville at 70. Portage won for the girls with 102 points, followed by Abundant Life Christian with 96.5 and Pardeeville at 83.5.

Waterloo’s best performances came in the form of a handful of fourth place finishes. Marshall got it done individually in the long jump with a distance of 18’8”. The rest came from relay teams.

Cefalu teamed up with senior Jose Limon, junior Harrison Schaefer, and sophomore Ben Ugorji to put up a time of 3:52.80 in the 4x400 meter relay. Cefalu and Schaefer were joined by junior Owen Koele and sophomore Isaac Opsteen to also take fourth in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:15.92. The girls also nabbed fourth in the 4x100 meter relay, courtesy of seniors Magaly Carrillo and Lily Jeffers as well as juniors Leah Alexander and Ella Wredberg. Their combined efforts gave them a time of 59.30 seconds.

Other notable Waterloo performances included Koele’s sixth place finish in the 3,200 meter run, the boys’ 4x100 meter relay performance for sixth place, and Kameron Ring’s seventh place finish in the triple jump.

Up next, the Pirates will have the benefit of home track advantage. Waterloo will host an invitational on Thursday, May 2. Participating teams include Central Wisconsin Christian, Columbus, Fall River, Horicon, Hustisford, Mayville, Pardeeville, Poynette, and Sun Prairie East.
