Elms Road bridge closure extended into 2027 for major redesign

FLUSHING TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJRT) - The Elms Road Bridge construction project is scheduled to last far longer than expected after inspectors discovered severe structural issues. According to the Genesee County Road Commission, crews found additional deterioration in the beams of the Elms Road Bridge over the Flint River. Rather than repairing portions of the bridge deck and replacing the joints as originally planned, the road commission decided to replace all of the bridge's beams and deck to ensure public safety.

Waterford schools cancels some bus routes due to lack of drivers

The Waterford School District is canceling some bus routes for students on a rolling basis due to a lack of qualified drivers, the district said Oct. 27. Sarah Davis, director of communications and community relations for the Oakland County system, said the cancellations only affect the district's 21 general education bus routes. Another 15 routes dedicated to special education have not been affected, she said. The district serves about 7,000 students and covers most of Waterford Township and parts of Independence Township and West Bloomfield. The district has about 34 drivers on staff now, Davis said, and needs at least six more to be stable. About four routes a day are being canceled due to a lack of drivers. The district is trying to provide transportation to all students at least four days out of the week, she said. It posted a weekly schedule on the district's Facebook page . The district is actively hiring drivers, Davis said, including offering to pay for a commercial drivers license training if a candidate does not yet have one. Pay has also been increased, topping out at $24.75, including paid off days, like snow days, when drivers don't end up working. The problem
