Cobb Spills 12M+ Gallons of Wastewater Into Lake Allatoona
A Cobb water reclamation facility released more than 12 million gallons of wastewater that did not meet facility standards into Lake Allatoona last week, the Cobb Water System announced Wednesday. The water was released into the lake from Cobb Water's Northwest Water Reclamation Facility on May 21 (6.46 million gallons) and May 22 (5.7 million gallons). The plant is operating normally, the county said, though Cobb Water workers are still investigating the cause of the spill, as it is classified by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD). Cobb Water added that the water was treated with disinfectant and will not impact drinking water supplies. Cobb Water staff "followed EPD protocols by promptly reporting the sampling results and have begun water quality testing upstream and downstream of the effluent discharge location in Lake Allatoona," the county said.
