Training officers for unpredictable situations
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Multiple officer-related shootings prompt the question of how law enforcement prepares in the event a circumstance calls for the use of force. At any moment, a routine traffic stop can take a turn for the worse. The more prepared an officer is for the unexpected, the better the outcome says Northern Illinois Training Advisory Board (NITAB) executive director Jeff Schelling. More than 1,200 Winnebago, DeKalb and Boone County law enforcement receive training from the organization. To keep officers on their toes, NITAB simulates life-based high and low-risk scenarios that change intensity based on the officer’s ability to de-escalate the situation. Schelling says in a real-life situation, if de-escalating does not work, officers must be prepared to protect innocent civilians and themselves.
