Nettleton held out by Wolverines in third round of playoffs
NETTLETON – An early four-run cushion was more than enough for East Webster’s Carson Norwood. The senior sidearmer tossed six shutout innings, and the Wolverines (26-3) cruised past Nettleton 13-0 last Monday night to sweep their Class 3A quarterfinal baseball series. East Webster will face Mooreville in the North finals.

Professional sculptor headed back to Starkville
One sculptor is making his way back to Starkville for a week-long visit. The Del Rendon Foundation and Mississippi Arts Commission’s newest artist in residence at the MacGown Art Retreat and Studio (MARS) is Lawson King. King will be in town May 11 - 17. King has previously done a sculpture for the Travis Outlaw Center, located at 405 Lynn Lane, called “Empty Handed.”

VandyBoys hosted three more home series on the Hawk against Missouri Tigers, Florida Gators and Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Commodores swept the Tigers, dropped one against the Gators and were upset by the unranked Bulldogs. They currently have an 11-11 record in conference play and are 32-14 overall. The Commodores secured home wins in all four non-series home matchups against Valparaiso, Middle Tennessee, UT Martin and Tennessee Tech.
Poor performance costs the Bulldogs in baseball loss to the Tide
After dealing with a bout of food poisoning for the last two days, the Crimson Tide looked ripe for a sweep. Instead, the Bulldogs were the team that looked ill. MSU was poor in every phase of the game and the Crimson Tide took advantage in a 10-5 victory. The loss took away an opportunity for the Bulldogs to move closer to locking up a hosting spot for the NCAA Tournament with two weekends remaining.

The Bulldogs were 23-5 in games scoring first headed into Sunday’s regular season finale. But MSU is also 9-12 when the opposing team scores first and those trends continued in the first two games against Georgia.
