Living alone, especially for the first time, can be a challenge for some people . Other individuals find these circumstances empowering. Some Americans thrive off having their own space, whether it's decorating their home, being responsible for their affairs, or simply having a place to unwind .

A recent data breakdown from 24/7 Wall St. found that over 37 million Americans live alone. The website also ranked the country's "loneliest cities" based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Analysts explained how they determined their rankings:

"To find the loneliest city in every state, 24/7 Wall St. used Census Bureau data, ranking 384 metro areas by the share of nonfamily households living alone out of all households. We added the share of people living alone as a percentage of the civilian, noninstitutionalized 16+ population. All data, including monthly gross rent and bachelor’s degree attainment rate, came from the 2022 American Community Survey either one-year or five-year estimates."

Walla Walla was named Washington State's loneliest city. Over 34% of all households were one-person households in 2022, and 16.8% of adult residents live alone. More than 55% of one-person households were at least 65 years or older. The monthly gross rent in Walla Walla was $1,085, and the median household income was $65,300.
