Wet weather, new councilors welcome but not webworms
The rains that passed through recently are a welcome relief, regardless of whether they are a temporary relief or the start of a turnaround. It is helpful to put this into prospective. Seven days ago – last Thursday (May 2) – the Colorado River at San Saba was flowing 47 cubic feet per second (cfs). Monday at the same measurement point on LCRA’s Hydromet system, the flow rate was 18,190 cfs. The…
KLST 6:00pm Forecast: Thursday, May 9, 2024
What started as a thundershower north of San Angelo around 3:00 pm eventually turned into a strong thunderstorm that made its way toward Brady on Thursday afternoon. The storm dumped heavy rain, various sizes of hail from small to large and even spawned a tornado warning between Brady and Llano. Meanwhile, in San Angelo, the second 100 degree day was recorded at Mathis Field Thursday afternoon, prior to the arrival of a cold front late in the day. Friday there is a 30% chance for showers and isolated non-severe storms but that will increase on Saturday and Sunday when we have 70% rain chances both days. High temperatures will be near 78 on Friday, closer to 70 on Saturday and 75 on Sunday.
Storms possible this afternoon, tornado watch issued
While some parts of the county are still recovering from the weekend’s flood, meteorologists said more storms may be possible beginning this afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook at 1:26 p.m. today, citing chances of severe thunderstorms, as well as a tornado watch at 1:35 p.m. The outlook is effective for Lampasas, Coryell, Hamilton, San Saba and surrounding counties.
Inside the Sport of Texas Rock Crawling
“The Star-Spangled Banner” has barely finished playing before a rock buggy skids down a giant boulder, overcorrects, then crashes sideways. The sight is startling, but it’s common at the Texas Top Gun Shootout, a rock-crawling competition held annually, in November, at the Katemcy Rocks Offroad Park northwest of Mason. The landscape is littered with trucks and Jeeps jostling through rock fields as custom-built buggies clamber their 42-inch tires over granite rock faces. The constant sounds of engines revving and rubber spinning, and the occasional driveline shattering, fill the air. From farther away, the sound of a metal frame torquing and bending could be mistaken for the screeching of a wild animal.
Flash Flood Alley poses problems in Central Texas
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Parts of the KXAN viewing area have been inundated with several rounds of showers and thunderstorms since May 1. Lampasas and San Saba counties had flood issues prompting numerous flash flood warnings. Flood issues were noted on the Lampasas River near Kempner when the river’s flood stage went over 18 feet.

Multiple golf teams from West Texas finished the 2024 golf season on the medal stand as the season concluded for boys and girls in Austin on Tuesday. More widespread rain chances in North Texas this weekend
NORTH TEXAS — It's been a tough night to the west, where multiple supercell thunderstorms have produced damaging tornadoes and large hail and we'll continue to follow the damage/injury reports overnight into Friday morning. The supercell storms near Abilene have weakened, but there are storms to the north of there and west of Wichita Falls that have restrengthened, however, these appear to slowly be moving northeast. There's also one strong storm in San Saba County in Central Texas, but this storm is moving east/southeast and shouldn't be an issue for North Texas overnight. Our storm threat is looking lower into the overnight hours. There have been a few isolated storms developing in North Texas after 8:30 p.m., but nothing is severe. There could be continued scattered storms into Friday morning, especially south of I-20, which could mean exacerbated flooding issues. That goes not just for Friday but through the weekend, as well. The flood watch was allowed to expire, but with some more widespread rain/storm chances Saturday into Sunday it's possible that another watch will be issued at some point this weekend.
