Dozens of Warren County high school students visited Hinds Community College’s Vicksburg-Warren Campus Thursday, April 11, to get a first-hand look at career-technical education programs and academic pathways.

Helping to shepherd visitors were high school students in the River City Early College program, which is based on the campus.

One such student, Quenterris Wince, 17, of Vicksburg, is not only a high school senior who will graduate in May, but also a Hinds sophomore who will receive an associate degree before moving on to study biology at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge.

She volunteered to speak to the incoming groups of students.

“It’s important to talk to students, as a student, because they know we’re on their level and I think it helps them to see another student who’s done it and can still relate to them where they’re at with all of this,” she said.

Wince talked about her experiences as a dually enrolled high school and college student.

“I was scared at first, but I applied myself. And I encourage you to join in on activities and clubs, too, because it’s a great way to meet people,” she said. “It helped me come out of my shell,”

Wince is also a member of the Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa.

Vicksburg High School senior Arthur Brown, 17, who participates in the Army JROTC, came in his fatigues. He plans to enroll at Hinds for fall 2024.

“They don’t stop until you win,” he said of his high school teachers. “That’s our motto: Don’t stop until you win. I’ve heard that Hinds instructors are like that, and they care about their students too, and want us to succeed.”
