UTICA — Anticipation surrounding Utica’s peregrine falcon nest reached its peak as the first of four eggs hatched at approximately 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, April 30. “Observers from the Utica Peregrine Falcon Project had been eagerly monitoring the nest since noticing a small hole, or “pip,” in one of the eggs on Monday evening, followed by the unmistakable sounds of a chick vocalizing from within. With great anticipation, they awaited the imminent hatch, which typically occurs within a day or two after the appearance of a pip. Directly following the hatch, Astrid, the female peregrine, immediately tucked the new chick beneath her, effectively hiding it from the nest cameras,” notes a release.
