SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Six cities were awarded historic preservation grants from the State Historical Society, according to an April 18 news release.

Historic preservation projects in Aberdeen, Dell Rapids, Garretson, Geddes, Pierre and Vermillion were granted a total of $75,000 from the historical society’s Deadwood Fund grant program.

“This historic preservation grants program is designed to encourage restoration or rehabilitation of historic properties and is one more way we can promote and protect our history and culture”, said Jenna Carlson Dietmeier, interim state historic preservation officer, in the news release.

The State Historical Society has funded the following projects:

Vermillion named a Tree City USA by Arbor Day Foundation
  • Aberdeen was awarded $20,000 to repair the bell tower, masonry and tuckpointing work to the Brown County Courthouse exterior. The courthouse was built in 1904.
  • The First National Bank of Dell Rapids was awarded $14,000 for tuckpointing to provide better structural integrity and basement remodel. The bank was built in 1889.
  • Garretson’s Split Rock Bathhouse was awarded $9,000 for rehabilitation work like caulk and tuckpointing on cracked mortar joints. The bathhouse was built in 1936.
  • The Papineau Trading Post in Geddes was awarded $5,000 for stabilization work like adding support beams to support the upper floor. The trading post was built in 1857.
  • The Farr House in Pierre was awarded $13,000 for reconstruction of damaged historic box gutter, fascia and soffit. The home was built in 1904.
  • The Vermillion Carnegie Library was awarded $14,000 to stabilize the building and fix the damaged cupola. The library was built in 1904.

The Deadwood Fund grant program gets their dollars from gaming revenue in Deadwood that was designated for historical preservation projects throughout the state. The grants are awarded twice a year. The next application deadline is October 1 .
