12-year-old Maplewood girl receives award for fighting kitchen fire
MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — A metro girl's quick thinking and plan of action didn't go unnoticed by first responders. Maplewood Fire-EMS Department presented 12-year-old Bella George with the Fire Chief's Recognition Award on Monday evening.They say when a kitchen fire broke out in George's Maplewood home, she knew exactly what to do. She swiftly ran to grab the nearest fire extinguisher. When she got back, the fire had quickly spread to a box on a nearby countertop. But that didn't stop her from putting it out. "My sisters noticed it, so I just went in and I got the fire extinguisher and I guess I just put it out," George said.According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the leading cause of fires and fire-related injuries in residential buildings.

Rosemount teen pleads guilty to role in Vietnam veteran's death
ST. PAUL, Minn. — A teen pleaded guilty on Wednesday to his role in the death of a Vietnam veteran who he had assaulted at a St. Paul park earlier this year.The 18-year-old from Rosemount was charged with first-degree manslaughter in juvenile court, as the incident occurred when he was still 17.Court documents say that on Jan. 23, 76-year-old Thomas Dunne took out his phone to take a picture of a male he observed urinating in a pond at Harriet Island Park. Challenge course opens in Bloomington
Finding a playground in the Twin Cities metro for littles is pretty easy, but a new one in Bloomington is perfect for the teens who want a challenge. The Smith Park Challenge Course is open now in near Interstate 494 and Highway 77. The park includes a timed 40-yard dash race track, an obstacle course for kids ages 13+ and an all-inclusive play structure for all ages. The playground is from local company, MWP Recreation. It’s the second of its kind in the Twin Cities. There’s another challenge course in Golden Valley, two in Jordan and another on the way in Lakeville. Construction At Northfield Township Public Safety Building
Construction has begun at the Northfield Township Public Safety Building on Main Street for the repair and replacement of sidewalks and parking lots. The work will be completed in phases to be as least obstructive to township business as possible. However, there will be occasions where public access to the lobby of the Township Office and Police Department Office will be limited or unavailable. During those times, staff will still be available by phone and/or email.
Twin Cities elementary students get a gymnastics lesson ahead of the U.S. Gymnastics Trials in Minneapolis
Kids from Nellie Stone Johnson Elementary School and the North Side Achievement Zone will be taking a field trip to Bloomington for an all day camp at the Rebels Gymnastics Club. It’s all part of the leadup to the U.S. Trials in June in Minneapolis.
