Louisiana Tech president, board spar over spiked faculty raises | Exclusive
Louisiana Tech University's outgoing President Jim Henderson and the University of Louisiana System leadership have sent competing letters to Tech's faculty and staff in a dispute over raises that now won't come as promised by Henderson. Henderson, who recently announced he will retire at the end of the year, promised faculty and staff 4% raises up to a maximum of $2,400 during fall convocation. But Henderson sent a letter to faculty and staff Oct. 6 saying University of Louisiana System President Rick Gallot called him and said to "tap the brakes" on the raises. "For now, I apologize for my failure to deliver what I promised and what you earned," Henderson said in his letter. Henderson noted the overall proposed budget was approved, but the raises were eliminated. Gallot and UL System Board of Supervisors Mark Romero responded Oct. 11 with their own letter to faculty in which they questioned Henderson's financial stewardship. "The complete financial picture (at Tech) raises legitimate concern," Gallot and Romero said. "Louisiana Tech's balance sheet has triggered multiple warning indicators including an unrestricted operating deficit, and has seen significant delines in liquidity." Gallot and Romero go on to say Moody's has downgraded Tech's bond rating

CHOUDRANT, La. — For more than 30 years, Terri Simmons has driven what might be Choudrant’s closest thing to a magic school bus. There may not be any talking lizards or trips through outer space, but there are seasonal treat bags, cold water on hot afternoons, prizes for nervous preschoolers, and a driver who cares deeply for her riders.
