Coal Trains Step Aside Saturday as Virginia’s Natural Tunnel Opens to Walkers
For one six-hour window this Saturday, Norfolk Southern will stop running freight trains through a working railroad tunnel in the mountains of southwest Virginia so that visitors can walk inside it on foot — the only time all year that the passage, which has been closed to pedestrians since 1989, opens to the public. Natural Tunnel State Park in Duffield will hold its annual Railroad Day on July 18, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET, giving anyone who shows up a chance to walk the tracks through a limestone cave that orator William Jennings Bryan once called the Eighth Wonder of the World. The event was announced by the Virginia DCR on June 29.
