Among the summer activities kids have to look forward to each summer in Hawkins County is “Words of Wheels,” the school bus turned bookmobile that travels around the county to encourage summer reading. Sadly, the bookmobile has been out of commission this summer, thanks to an engine that gave up the ghost after hundreds of thousands of miles. Putting a new motor in the old bus is simple enough, but the school system had to ensure it had available funding to do the repairs. Director of Schools Matt Hixson said that getting the bookmobile back on the road was a credit to the system’s vehicle maintenance crew. “We couldn’t afford a new engine, (or) even some of the remanufactured engines out there,” he said. “But our guys not only installed it, but they found a good one at a good deal and got it in here. We’re up and running because of their diligence.” The system waited until the end of the 2025-26 academic year to do the work. Hixson stated that some money was left over in the operating budget for last school year, and that was repurposed to get the bus back on the road. “Thankfully we had
