NTSB urges Ohio Turnpike to eliminate manual toll lanes after fatal crash
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WOWO) — The National Transportation Safety Board is urging the Ohio Turnpike to eliminate its low-speed manual toll lanes after determining that a hybrid toll plaza design contributed to a fatal 2024 crash near Toledo. The NTSB said fully electronic tolling could have prevented the August 15,...

Road Warrior: Turnpike detours send traffic around I-475, Maumee streets
Weather permitting, Saturday night should mark the last of three overnight closings of the Ohio Turnpike’s westbound lanes for bridge work at the Maumee River. While traffic normally uses the eastbound left shoulder and left lane while the bridge’s westbound half is redecked, concrete pours for the new deck require a detour to prevent vibrations that would damage those pours. It’s not a big deal for most drivers from Toledo because the best routes east or west from the city don’t cross that bridge. But motorists who enter the toll road in Wood County or farther east will be detoured and should plan ahead to avoid unnecessary mileage. The westbound lanes will be closed between I-75 and U.S. 20 (Reynolds Road) from 7 p.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Monday. The detour will follow I-75, I-475/U.S. 23, Dussel Drive, and U.S. 20. Local drivers should expect congestion on Dussel and Reynolds during the detour. The work is weather dependent. During the weekend just past, the concrete pour was switched from Saturday night to Friday night because of rain on Saturday. **** After three drivers got flat tires from bridge potholes, the Ohio Department of Transportation closed the ramp from eastbound Monroe

TARTA designates Monroe corridor for bus rapid transit
The Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority has formally designated Monroe Street as its preferred corridor for developing bus rapid transit. The concept proposes buses running in dedicated lanes with service as frequent as every 15 minutes and platform-level boarding at station stops. “This is the result of a lot of work by a lot of people with a passion for raising the quality of life for commuters in northwest Ohio,” Rick Bailey, TARTA’s deputy chief executive officer, said after the agency’s board of directors voted Thursday. “In areas of the country where elements of bus rapid transit have been implemented, it has led directly to economic development, better access to community for those with mobility challenges, and an improved experience for everyone who depends on public transit,” Mr. Bailey said. The “locally preferred alternative” designation means the Monroe corridor is where TARTA will focus ongoing planning for bus rapid transit development. The designation makes the corridor eligible for federal grant funding. TARTA’s No. 2 bus between Sylvania and Oregon now operates along the Monroe corridor and is one of its most popular routes. The TARTA board chose that corridor for bus rapid transit because of its high ridership, the number

Gas Price Patrol: After another tough week at the pump, some reasons for optimism
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - After another bad week at the gas pump, oil markets are pulling back to start the week. Plus, we’ll look at how many states are now paying $3 more per gallon for diesel now compared to a year ago as prices near $7. Josh Croup...

Ohio Turnpike westbound lanes to close Friday night at Maumee River bridge
The Ohio Turnpike’s westbound lanes will be detoured around the Maumee River bridge Friday night while concrete is poured as part of a deck replacement project. From 7 p.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday, westbound traffic will be diverted via I-75, I-475/U.S. 23, Dussel Drive, and U.S. 20, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission said. One lane will reopen at 7 a.m. and a second lane will reopen at 10 a.m. Local drivers should be aware of unusually heavy traffic on eastbound Dussel and northbound Reynolds Road (U.S. 20) during these hours. The closing is the second of three such detours planned while a new deck is poured for the westbound half of the turnpike’s river bridge. It was originally scheduled for Saturday night but moved up to Friday night because of forecast rain.

Editorial: Look out for safety
Is it just our imagination, or are vehicle accidents on the rise in metro Toledo? In a single week, four people were killed or seriously injured in collisions involving drivers making left turns: Judy Tanner, 20, was struck on Sept. 9 while using a crosswalk on Glendale Avenue by an SUV turning left out of the Walmart shopping center. She died the following day. Katelyn Osborn, 34, who was pregnant, was severely injured Friday when a car turning left struck her e-bike on Lagrange Street. Christopher Rupley, 71, died Friday night when his northbound motorcycle collided with a vehicle making a left turn onto Glanzman Road from Byrne Road. John Crapsey, 58, was critically injured late Friday night when his motorcycle collided with a vehicle turning left on State Rt. 2 near Eber Road. During that same stretch, 75-year-old bicyclist Robert Meeker died after he fell from his bicycle into traffic on University Hills Boulevard. While legal fault in each case remains under investigation, the common denominator is clear: vulnerable road users — pedestrians, cyclists, e-bikers, and motorcyclists — are bearing the brunt of devastating injuries that a driver inside a protective steel frame would likely survive. Four blocks of 11th Street changed to two-way traffic
Four blocks of 11th Street in downtown Toledo have been converted from one-way to two-way traffic. The change was implemented this week between Monroe and Jackson streets, with traffic signals installed for southbound traffic at Jefferson Avenue and at Monroe, and a four-way stop set up at 11th and Madison Avenue. Eleventh remains one-way northbound between Washington and Monroe streets — a block where it handles a substantial volume of traffic off the Indiana Avenue/Washington Street exit from southbound I-75 — while Do Not Enter signs on the southbound stoplight masts at Monroe warn drivers against continuing south there. The change is consistent with other recent changes by the Toledo Department of Transportation to reduce the number of one-way streets in the downtown area.
