Randazzo death officially ruled suicide
COLUMBUS — Last month’s death of Ohio’s former top utilities regulator in the midst of a federal bribery scandal that also involves two former executives of FirstEnergy Corp. has officially been ruled a suicide. The Franklin County coroner’s office found that Samuel Randazzo, former chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, died from asphyxia by hanging himself shortly before midnight on April 9. Mr. Randazzo, 74, of Columbus, was facing trial at the time in both federal and state courts in connection with a pair of bribery schemes that also involved Charles (Chuck) Jones, former CEO of the Akron-based utility giant, and Michael Dowling, a former vice president. Mr. Randazzo died in a Columbus warehouse owned by one of his businesses, Sustainability Funding Alliance of Ohio. A toxicology analysis found no signs of illicit drugs in his system.
