Your guide to vaccines for flu, COVID-19 and RSV in Wisconsin

It's officially fall – leaves are turning, evening sunlight is fading, and respiratory viruses will soon start circulating at higher levels. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Sept. 30 released its annual recommendations for vaccines to protect against the flu and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, as well as updated COVID-19 shots. The recommendations lean on guidance from major medical organizations, not the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, whose immunization committee is currently inactive due to federal turmoil around vaccines and is not expected to issue updated guidelines. Across Wisconsin, about 11,000 people were hospitalized during last year's respiratory season with the flu, COVID-19 or RSV, chief medical officer and state epidemiologist for communicable diseases Dr. Ryan Westergaard said in a Sept. 30 news briefing. "That's something that you wouldn't wish on anyone," he said. Dr. Bill Calawerts, a family medicine physician and assistant professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin, said he welcomes discussions about which vaccines are appropriate and when. "I and my physician colleagues are not offended by questions," Calawerts said. "If you really want to talk about it, don't be ashamed to bring questions to your clinician."
