Southeast Iowa fire chief disciplined for responding to incident scene hours after consuming beer
The city of Centerville's fire chief is facing disciplinary action after admitting to drinking alcohol before responding to a water rescue last week. According to a release from the city, on May 3, Fire Chief Vern Milburn was among a crew that responded to a water rescue call. A complaint was made that night that Milburn may have been under the influence.
Newtown-Harris board confirms Career Ladder for next school year
The Newtown-Harris R-3 Board of Education approved the Career Ladder program and summer school for the upcoming school year on May 8th. The Career Ladder program will maintain the same structure as this year. Stage 1 involves 50 hours of work for $1,500. Superintendent Dr. Matt Copeland noted the program costs the district $6,000 against $15,000 in payments, with the state covering the remainder.
Unionville License Office Contract Announced
The Missouri Department of Revenue has announced the new management contract for the Unionville License office. The office has been closed since January 5th. The contract has been awarded to Mary Rhonda VanBuskirk. All license office contracts in Missouri are awarded through a competitive bid process. License offices are operated by independent contractors but overseen by the Missouri Department of Revenue.

Man seriously injured in rollover crash on old Highway 63
A single-vehicle accident occurred Friday night around 7:50 p.m. on Old Highway 63, approximately half a mile south of LaPlata, resulting in serious injuries to the driver. The vehicle, a 2019 Can-Am UTV, was heading north when it lost control and overturned. Austin L. Roberts, 27, of LaPlata, was identified as the driver of the vehicle. Roberts was transported by Air-Evac to University Hospital in Columbia for treatment of serious injuries.

Richard L. Anderson, 93 Unionville, MO formerly an Alden, IA resident passed away on May 1, 2024, at Putnam County Nursing Home in Unionville. Funeral services for Mr. Anderson will be held at the Cottage Community Church in rural Iowa Falls, IA at 11:00 a.m., on May 6, 2024. Reverend Russell Surls will officiate. A time of visitation will be 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the Lake City Cemetery, Lake City, IA.
