Things are still quite around The Atlantic Basin
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - There are currently no areas to watch for potential tropical development around the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf, nor the Atlantic Ocean. The reason for the real lack of activity so far is largely due to the current El Nino pattern shaping up, which is expected strengthen during the peak of this hurricane season. El Nino is when you have warmer than average sea surface temps in the tropical Pacific Ocean, and this usually leads to an increase in wind shear over the Atlantic Basin. Wind shear is not favorable for tropical cyclone development because it disrupts the structure of storms.

Expect a wash, rinse, and repeat forecast all week
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - This week, expect a typical summertime forecast for us in the South. Of course, it’s going to be hot and humid with seasonable highs in the low-mid 90s. Yet, the humidity will make it ‘feel like’ temps are in the low 100s each afternoon. So, continue to practice heat safety if you work outside or plan to do anything strenuous outdoors: www.weather.gov/safety/heat.

Rain chances dropping in the coming days
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Our Monday morning has started out with widespread fog across central and eastern Mississippi and western Alabama, and that fog was limiting our visibility quite a bit in several spots. Travel with caution and allow for a little bit of extra drive time so that you can make it to your destination safely. Monday morning also started out with mostly cloudy skies and with temps in the lower to mid 70s.

Continue to practice heat safety for Thursday
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Meridian reached its hottest day of the year, thus far, on Wednesday hitting 97 degrees for a high (with a max heat index of 107). Unfortunately, dangerous heat will continue into Thursday due to the infamous ‘heat dome’. Heat index values could get to around 105 degrees due to very humid conditions. So, if you plan to spend some extended time outside Thursday afternoon, it’s important that you practice heat safety to avoid suffering from heat illnesses.

Multiple hazards for Tuesday: Heat & storms
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - A First Alert Weather Day continues for our Tuesday. More intense heat is expected thanks to a heat dome (that’s baking a lot of our Nation) and high dew points (making it very humid). Tuesday brings temps in the mid 90s with dew points in the 70s which is NOT a good combination. Locally, the heat index could climb to 105 or higher Tuesday afternoon... prompting a Heat Advisory for our area.

It’s about to really heat up!
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - After a rainy June, the rest of this month looks to end on a drier note. Isolated showers are possible Friday, but the weekend & early next week look relatively rain-free. This pause on the rain is due to an upper-level ridge of High Pressure building...
