Racine porch fire leaves family homeless
RACINE, Wis. - A Racine family is unable to live in their home near Buchanan and Barker after a fire that started on the home's porch late on Monday, April 22. Racine fire officials say crews were dispatched to the porch fire around 11 p.m. Monday. Three residents who were home at the time of the fire, managed to get out of the building safely and call 911.
Rising homelessness creates challenges for Racine service providers
RACINE, Wis. — New data suggests that homelessness across Wisconsin continues to increase even as more time passes since the COVID-19 pandemic. The Wisconsin Policy Forum analyzed federal data which suggests that homelessness rose nearly 2% between 2022 and 2023 in the state. The data shows that homelessness rates dropped in some places like Dane County, but rose slightly in others like Milwaukee and Racine counties.
Urgency imposed by 'Core Four' has Oak Creek baseball striving for state in 2024
OAK CREEK – There is an undercurrent of urgency in the way the Oak Creek baseball team has played on the way to a 7-0 record to start the week. It was evident in last Friday's 7-0 win over Racine Horlick in the way Payten Jibben meticulously worked through the lineup on the mound as Nathan Hanel showed complete command calling pitches behind the plate. It also showed in the way shortstop CJ Trask instinctively covered second to turn a lineout double play, and the way outfielder Cade Palkowski approached his at-bats and aggressiveness on the base paths. This is a group that has been there before, having reached the WIAA Division 1 sectional playoffs each of the last three seasons, including a sectional finals appearance the Knights lost 2-0 to rival Franklin.
Union Grove complaints of 'suspicious circumstances' investigated
UNION GROVE, Wis. - The Racine County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating two complaints of suspicious circumstances that occurred in the Village of Union Grove. A news release says witnesses reported around 8 p.m. on Friday, April 12, and around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, a middle-aged man, white, in a white or light silver sedan was seen watching children and/or asking children if they needed a ride.
Sturtevant Kwik Trip road rage shooting, Oak Creek man pleads guilty
STURTEVANT, Wis. - Gage Cortez of Oak Creek pleaded guilty on Monday, April 22 to first-degree recklessly endangering safety in connection with a Sturtevant road rage shooting in November 2022. A second charge of first-degree reckless injury was dismissed and read into the court record for the purposes of sentencing.
Former Taycheedah inmate pleads not guilty to July 19 killing of cellmate Cindy Schulz-Juedes
Taylor L. Sanchez, of Trevor, faces a charge of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of Cindy Schulz-Juedes, 68. Schulz-Juedes was convicted in October 2021 of being a party to the crime of first-degree intentional homicide in the 2006 death of her husband Kenneth Juedes. In June 2022, Marathon County Circuit Judge Michael Moran sentenced Schulz-Juedes to life in prison. Schulz-Juedes continued to say she was innocent of the crime until her death. Her appeal of the conviction continues in the appellate system.
2 Lake Villa men charged with setting fire to former Round Lake Beach movie theater
ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. - Two Lake County men are facing arson charges after allegedly setting fire to an old movie theater in Round Lake Beach over the weekend.
