Southwestern Heights Awards Assembly
At the Senior Awards Assembly on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, the following awards and scholarships were presented. The Ag Futures Scholarship was presented by Gabe Baeza from American Implement and Steve Harkness from Western State Bank to Kaylen Langhofer. Rachel Amerin, a representative from Invenergy, presented their scholarship to Kaylen Langhofer. Davida Gomez from Seaboard Foods presented scholarships to Kaylen Langhofer and Emma Stanfield. Dawn Unruh, CEO of Artesian Valley Health Systems, presented a scholarship to Emma Stanfield. Lisa, Batt, Regional Fellowship of Christian Athletes Representative, recognized Kaila Froese as an FCA Outstanding Athlete. Southern Pioneer Electric announced two scholarship winners from Southwestern Heights, Kaylen Langhofer and Allison Sanchez. The Seed Sowers scholarship, which is open to students of family members employed by either Bank of the Plains, Clawson Ranch Partnership, or High Plains Ponderosa Dairy, was presented to Kaylen Langhofer. Kismet United Methodist Church awarded a scholarship to Kaylen Langhofer. The St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Altar Society Scholarship awarded their scholarship based on the following criteria: a student who is an active member of the St Patrick’s Catholic Church, who works to potential, who is a good citizen, and has leadership qualities. The National FFA and Ford Motor Company will be awarding a Built Ford Tough scholarship to Kaylen Langhofer at the Kansas State FFA Convention in Manhattan later this month.

First Inning Dooms LHS Softball in Topeka
Liberal’s softball team allowed nine runs in the first inning on the way to a run rule loss in their 6A regional Thursday afternoon in Topeka. Washburn Rural topped Liberal 14-4 in five innings. Rural out-hit Liberal 10-6. LHS had six errors. LHS scored one in the first to take the lead. They added two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Taylor Harding was 2-3 with two runs. The Redskins finish 6-19. Washburn Rural is 18-7 and made state.

Liberal junior softball player Zoey Torres is this week’s Hay Rice and Associates Athlete of the Week. Torres is hitting .378 with one home run, four doubles, one triple, and 19 runs for the Redskins this season. As a pitcher, she has 46 strikeouts and 21 walks for 6-17 Liberal. She is also involved in volleyball, basketball, student council, NHS, and Marvel Movies Club. The LHS softball team faces Washburn Rural Thursday at 4:30 in Topeka.

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - KWCH - The Liberal Police Department is attempting to locate a 14-year-old female who is believed to have been abducted on 5/15/2024 at approximately 6:45pm. The KBI issued an Amber Alert for Marisheila Luis De La Cruz, last seen at Mary Frame Park in Liberal, KS, wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, and pink sandals. The suspect is a possible Hispanic male with black hair and was seen wearing a black shirt and black pants. The suspect was seen leaving in a black 2007 Tahoe with Texas Tag TTJ8135. It is unknown if they are still in the area. If you have any information regarding this vehicle or incident, please contact your local authorities or the Liberal Police Department immediately.
Manhattan Blanks Liberal
For the second consecutive season, the Liberal girls soccer season ended at Manhattan. The seven seed Manhattan Indians blanked the 10 seed Liberal Redskins 5-0 Tuesday night in Manhattan. It was 3-0 at the half. Manhattan is 11-5-1 and Liberal finishes 8-7-2.
