TU holds event to promote safe and fun environment for children in sports

TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa held a free Youth Sports Safety Festival in east Tulsa on Saturday.

The event promoted safe and fun environments for local children participating in sports.

Children and their families gathered at McCullough Park and learned about the importance of safety gear and how to properly use sports equipment like bikes, scooters and skateboards from certified health professionals.

"Part of keeping kids safe is injury prevention," said Laura Wilson with the University of Tulsa. "So we can absolutely take care of kids once they are hurt, but ideally we want to prevent that in the first place. We know that engaging in physical activity is really important for physical and mental health for kids, but we want to make sure they are doing it in a safe manner, so we thought this would just be a fun way to get kids our here and be active and doing so in a safe, responsible way."

The children were also taught what to have in an emergency kit in case of an injury from TU's School of Nursing.
