Juneteenth 2024 in the South End
Updated on June 14 to include events in Renton (June 15), Skyway (June 15), Tukwila (June 19), and Othello (June 22). Every Juneteenth in Seattle sees a blossoming of celebrations across the South End, honoring Black American history and commemorating the end of chattel slavery in this country. Here’s what I wrote about the holiday in last year’s event roundup:

Seattle Embraces Juneteenth: Celebrations at Seward Park to Honor African American Liberation and Cultural Heritage
Juneteenth celebrations are gearing up in Seattle, marking a day of significant importance for the African American community. This year, locals can join the festivities at Seward Park on June 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., to honor the moment in 1865 when enslaved Texans were finally informed of their liberation, a good two years post-Emancipation Proclamation. In a move reflecting the deepening recognition of this historic event, President Joe Biden declared Juneteenth a federal holiday back in 2021, and subsequently, the Seattle City Council followed suit by declaring it a local holiday in December 2021, as per the Seattle Information Technology.

Seattle's Seward Park Clinches Prestigious Green Flag Award for Sustainability and Community Impact
Seattle just scored a big green thumbs up for environmental and community excellence, folks. Seward Park, a picturesque slice of nature hugging Lake Washington, has nabbed the Green Flag Award. This isn't just any pat on the back for being pretty; the Green Flag Award is a serious nod to spaces that juggle sustainability, biodiversity, and community vibes like a seasoned circus performer, minus the top hat and the juggled chainsaws. Pretty neat, right? Parkways Seattle announced this first-of-its-kind recognition for an American municipal park on June 14th, noting the international panel of judges who, frankly, seemed to be quite charmed by Seward's old-growth forest, art studios, and the community mixing it up on the daily there.
