The Republic's Top 10 Arizona HS baseball players for April 15-20; vote in poll

It was a big week for teams making their moves and players asserting themselves as among the best in Arizona. Here are the best of the best performances from the week of April 15-20 in high school baseball. Coaches nominated players. Vote in our poll below for the top overall performance.

The Republic's Top 10 Baseball Players of the Week

1. Pops Godina, Cottonwood Mingus, SS, Sr.

In a 16-3 victory over Agua Fria, he hit for the cycle, going 5-for-5 with two singles, a double, a triple and a home run. He also went 2-for-6 with three RBIs in a 20-15 win over Coconino. He drove in seven runs in two games.

2. Bennett Vondrak, Tucson Desert Christian, RHP/SS, Sr.

He pitched a complete game shutout in a 4-0 win over San Manuel for the 1A South Region title, striking out 17, a single-game school record. He also set a state record for RBIs in a game with nine in a 28-0 win against Patagonia.

3. Cam Caminiti, Scottsdale Saguaro, LHP/OF, Sr.

He combined with Cade Shumard to no-hit Phoenix St. Mary's 6-1. He pitched five innings, striking out 13 and walking one. He also went 4-for-5 at the plate during the week with two doubles, two RBIs and three walks.

4. Benton Hickman, Phoenix Brophy Prep, RHP, Jr.

He pitched the final 3⅔ innings of shutout ball in a 4-3 win over Chandler Hamilton that helped the Broncos beat the Huskies for the first time since 2016. He gave up just two hits and struck out four.

5. Cade Shumard, Saguaro, LHP/OF, Sr.

He pitched the final two innings of the combined no-hitter against St. Mary's, striking out six.

6. Jayson Brown, Tucson Mica Mountain, P, So.

He went 2-for-4 with an RBI and pitched 4⅔ innings in one-hit relief in an 8-7 win over Walden Grove.

7. Gunnar Penzkover, Phoenix Northwest Christian, RHP, Sr.

He struck out 13 in a five-inning no-hitter against Chino Valley for a 10-0 victory.

8. Caleb Rosado, Yuma Gila Ridge, LHP, Sr.

He threw six innings of two-run ball, striking out 11 in a 4-3 win over Yuma Kofa, a game in which he went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. He followed that by going 4-for-4 against Basha on Friday.

9. Ryan Dilger, Mesa Desert Ridge, RHP, Sr.

In a 3-1 win over Gilbert, he pitched six innings, striking out 13 and walking two.

10. Logan Spetz, Desert Ridge, CF/RHP, Sr.

He went 4-for-8 in two games with a double and a go-ahead home run in an extra-innings win over Desert Vista. He went 2-for-2 against Gilbert on Senior Night. He also pitched 2 1/3 innings against Desert Vista, giving up no runs and striking out two.

Honorable mention

Tyler Russell, Queen Creek Castell, OF, Sr.

In a 13-8 win over Hamilton, he hit a home run and drove in four runs.

Drew Rogers, Hamilton, C, Sr.

He threw out two baserunners trying to steal against Brophy and had a home run and three RBIs against Casteel.

Shane Miller, Gilbert Higley, SS, Sr.

He went 4-for-10 in a 3-0 week with two doubles and three RBIs.

Jack Lafflam, Brophy Prep, RHP, Jr.

In a 10-0 run-rule win over Basha, he struck out six in five innings.

Jack Ohman, Brophy Prep, INF, Sr.

In the 4-3 win over Hamilton, his RBI double in the top of the seventh pushed across the winning run. He had another hit and two RBIs in the game.
