Kansas City's newest Asian store opens in longtime grocery spot

Thang Piang has built a loyal following at his international grocery store — Zoland Asian Market in Kansas City, Kansas, — for the past six years. He aims to please the community, providing whatever goods customers request from Thailand, China, Japan and beyond. One recurring petition from customers has been another, larger store. Like Piang does with product requests, he set to work ironing out the details to make their wishes come to fruition. Finally, after two years of searching for the perfect spot, Zoland has opened a second grocery store. It’s taken over a historic building, which has housed several other grocers, at 7613 NW Prairie View Road. “I had a few customers asking, ‘Hey, why don’t you open up in the Northland, there’s no Asian grocery store here,’” he said. “People drive all the way (there) from Kansas City every single day.” His new location boasts a sprawling 21,000 square feet of produce, meats, frozen food and dry goods. It’s an impressive upgrade, considering his KCK spot at 7925 State Ave. is around 3,200 square feet. Piang said Zoland’s first few days in the new store have been sufficiently busy. While he’s waiting to fill some spaces with

KC deli, barbecue spot closes. Owner says ‘terrible' parking contributed

After a year in an iconic River Market space, a Kansas City deli and barbecue restaurant has decided to pack up. Car No. 551 — located in a 1940s streetcar dubbed “ Trolley Tom ” — served its last pulled pork sandwich at 426 Delaware St. on Sunday. There are a few things that contributed to the closure, owner William Jordan told The Star in an interview Tuesday. Business hasn’t been what he hoped. Foot traffic dipped during the World Cup and has only recently rebounded for him, he said. But a lack of accessible parking spaces was a notable hurdle, he said. “Parking is terrible,” Jordan told The Star. “The contract company that’s doing all the parking control for the city is overreaching.” “As soon as people park, they write tickets.” Sue Patterson, a spokeswoman with the City Market, sent a written statement in response to The Star’s questions about area parking. “We’re always sorry to see a neighborhood business close, and we wish Mr. Jordan well in his future endeavors,” Patterson wrote in part. “City Market offers free two-hour parking in City Market square (on Walnut Street between 3rd and 5th Streets) on weekdays year-round and on weekends

Chubby Smith Guitar Collection Goes on Sale Saturday at Lawrence Arts Center

LAWRENCE, Kan. (KPR) — Jeff "Chubby" Smith was a longtime recording engineer and producer at Kansas Public Radio and the Kansas Audio-Reader Network. He died in May of this year. While he was born Jeffrey Eugene Smith in 1966, few of his friends or co-workers ever called him that. They simply called him Chuck, Chub, Chubby, Ascencion or Chubias. (He never could decide on a single first name.) He produced KPR's Opera is My Hobby, with Dr. Jim Seaver. He recorded and produced the Ruel Joyce Recital Series and countless other live musical performances.

How Long Do Dogs Live and Which Breeds Last the Longest According to New Research

The average dog lives 10 to 13 years, according to Pet MD , but the spread around that number is wide. Breed, body size, genetics and daily care all tilt the odds. A new genetic study is now helping explain why big dogs tend to die young while small dogs linger, and the findings are reshaping how veterinarians, breeders and owners think about canine longevity. What’s Happening A study published in Science has identified self-replicating stretches of DNA called LINE1 as a driver of accelerated aging in dogs. The analysis drew on 864 dogs enrolled in the nationwide Dog Aging Project. Larger breeds lost 35% more LINE1 methylation than smaller breeds, meaning the “jumping genes” that copy themselves across DNA and damage it were active more often, and earlier. Longevity extremes make the gap vivid. An Australian Cattle Dog named “Bluey” holds the Guinness World Record as the longest-living dog at 29 years and 5 months. Breeds routinely cited for long life, including Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus and Dachshunds, cluster at the small end of the size scale. Why It’s Happening The size-lifespan paradox has puzzled biologists for decades. Across the rest of the animal kingdom, bigger species tend to outlive
