La Madeleine's first move into the Midwest arrived carrying some difficult baggage. The Dallas-based French bakery-café brand, owned by French restaurant conglomerate Groupe Le Duff, announced Thursday an eight-unit development deal covering the Kansas City area — its first formal franchise presence in the Midwest since the brand was founded in Dallas more than four decades ago. New Johnson County grocery store now open in this long-vacant space

It’s been 18 years since anyone’s heard the wheels of a shopping cart squeaking across the cement floor of Dillons in Shawnee. The Kansas-based grocery store vacated the 7405 Quivira Rd. space in 2008, leaving a hole in a shopping center that was built in 1988. Cash registers have not beeped inside its walls since. That is — until a few days ago. After years of discussion, the Westbrooke Village Shopping Center finally has a new grocery store tenant. The Fresh Market of Shawnee, part of the El Mercado Fresco family of brands, is now open in the long-vacant space. It’s the latest concept of Eddie Musallet, who also owns international store World Fresh Market. Musallet’s name has been in the local restaurant and retail news circuit lately for his deal with Texas-based restaurant chain la Madeleine . He’ll bring eight of those cafés across the metro, starting in 2027. As far as Fresh Market goes, it has many Hispanic products found at El Mercado Fresco, as well as plenty of U.S. favorites. From exposed wire lines to employees eating while preparing food, health inspectors in Missouri and Kansas found numerous violations at Kansas City-area restaurants last week. Dining establishments like sit-down restaurants, drive-thrus, gas stations and grocery stores are required to get food inspections, and governments have to release those inspections to the public. In Kansas City and Independence, each city’s health department enforces the food code while in Kansas, the state’s Department of Agriculture handles inspections. The lower the number of violations, the better. Most restaurants correct violations at the time of the original inspection or shortly after. The full inspections show how each establishment has corrected or is working to correct any remaining violations. They are available for Kansas City at inspectionsonline.us/foodsafety/mousakansascity/search.htm and Johnson and Wyandotte counties at portal.kda.ks.gov/Food/FoodInspectionSearch. Here are the restaurants in Kansas City, as well as in Wyandotte and Johnson County, that received seven or more priority and priority foundation ​violations from Oct. 4-11.
