HAMBURG TWP. — Lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water in and around Hamburg Township have struggled with invasive vegetation growth and algae blooms. The growth can impact the health of bodies of water, and residents' ability to enjoy recreation and swimming.

To help combat the problem and keep waterways in the Huron River watershed healthier, officials passed an ordinance last fall banning the use of fertilizers from Nov. 16-April 30. During warmer months, fertilizers are banned within 50 feet of the water's edge.

Breaking the new rules can result in fines starting at $100.

Following the rules could also save homeowners money collected through a special assessment for weed control.

"The nutrient level in the lakes is continuing to rise," said Hamburg Township Supervisor Pat Hohl. "A lot of that is coming from lawn fertilizer that runs off into the lakes and river."

Whether people use chemical or natural fertilizers on their lawn doesn't matter.

"Cut down on nutrients and you’ll cut down on the weed growth," Hohl said.

The township harvests weeds out of the Huron River, which can reduce flooding in the area.

Another way to keep lakes and rivers healthier, according to Portage Baseline Whitewood Owners Lake Association Board Member Dave Wilutis, is to have a buffer of deep-rooted, native vegetation.

"You shouldn't have a desire to have (a lawn like) a golf course," Wilutis said. "We need vegetation buffers."

Association and township officials hope to encourage their counterparts in neighboring townships, including Putnam, Dexter, and Webster, to pass similar ordinances.
