Traffic safety commission hears reports, concerns
The Sawyer County Traffic Safety Commission held its quarterly meeting Thursday Aug. 20 at the courthouse, hearing reports from state, county and tribal stakeholders regarding ongoing highway projects, statistics and concerns. The Commission is chaired by Sheriff Doug Mrotek. Sheriff’s Lieut. Greg Ripczinski reported that officers have issued only one child restraint citation in more than 500 contacts with motorists, so “There’s a lot of compliance out there.” Chief Deputy Bryan Deyo mentioned concerns about the 55 mph speed limit on the stretch of Highway 77 east of the Namekagon River bridge. Motorists coming off Airport Road have trouble seeing traffic due to the curve and trees. The question is if the 45 mph speed limit could be extended eastward from Duffy Road to Wheeler Road. WisDOT traffic safety engineer Aaron Crist reported that temporary signals at the Teal River bridge on Hwy. 77 will be operational until Oct. 24. Crist said the detour for the ongoing State Hwy. 27 construction project, south of Hayward from Carol Drive to Boylan Road, was due to be lifted as of Aug. 28. During the remaining culvert work and paving, traffic will continue on the highway, guided by construction workers with flags until
