A county courthouse from the 1890s still handles everyday paperwork like vital records and vehicle registration. The building is old, but it is still working. Its stone walls rise above a narrow mountain downtown, and its tower can look almost out of place there. I like how a coalfield county built something this bold for a town tucked between steep ridges.
