Salmonella shut down a small Virginia estuary to shellfish harvesting, but all oyster farmers are feeling the pain

In early October, the state closed an estuary in the Northern Neck to shellfish harvesting after people from Virginia to Colorado were sickened by a rare form of salmonella. It was traced to raw oysters sold from September 18 to October 8, by a single company in Virginia. Last Friday, a person from Delaware was added to the list of 28 people and 14 states.

Albemarle County Proposed Sales Tax Hike Is Yet Another Bloated Bureaucratic Blunder

One key provision to watch as Albemarle County residents head to the polls this Tuesday is the proposed sales tax hike. The county wants to increase the sales tax by one percentage point, pushing the total sales tax rate, combining both local and state, to 6.3%. While an increase from the current 5.3% combined sales tax to 6.3% may seem futile to many administrators in Albemarle, it represents yet another opportunity for a failing bureaucracy to justify taking more of the constituency’s money to bail them out of bad policymaking.

Why this Waynesboro school farm is more than just a garden

WAYNESBORO — A visitor recently stopped by Berkeley Glenn before heading to the Waynesboro Education Farm behind the elementary school. When signing in, the visitor was told they could just list destination as "classroom" because the farm is an outdoor classroom. Ryan Blosser couldn't have been happier when he heard that story. As the lead educator on the farm, Blosser has known this was a classroom since he took the job, but one of his missions is to convince others of the same thing. When he heard that story he thought, maybe that was happening. The farm program began with a renewable grant awarded in 2019. In the spring of 2021, a group of students from Kate Collins Middle School along with help from Alleghany Mountain Institute began work on the high-yield farm. In 2022, district leaders reevaluated the farm's mission, shifting the primary target from general food access to direct student achievement. Last year students prepared 1,940 meals, had 5,700 lessons tied to Virginia's Standards of Learning and 8,000 hours of instruction on the farm "I'm proud of that number," Blosser said, "because it makes this a classroom." The farm has 1.25 acres fenced in and a third of

Axios Live: Virginia looks to schools amid weak funding to sustain biotech growth

RICHMOND — Virginia's biotech growth is drawing schools, industry groups and local governments into a statewide effort to boost the industry's place in the region's economy, state and business leaders said at an Axios event. Why it matters: Education and workforce development efforts are investing in the biopharma talent pipeline earlier, even at the elementary school level, with the potential to connect more Virginians with jobs in the growing sector. Axios' Sabrina Moreno and Brock Turner spoke to Virginia deputy secretary for commerce and trade Kristen Dahlman, Virginia Economic Development Partnership chief of talent and workforce strategy Megan Healy, Virginia Bio CEO John Newby and Goochland County administrator Jeremy Raley. The Oct. 29 event was sponsored by PhRMA. What they're saying: Newby identified funding as a weakness for the region, compared to other biotech hubs like San Francisco and Boston . "So we're strong in all categories. The one category that Virginia in this region is weakest in, vis-à-vis the rest of the country, is funding," Newby said. Virginia Bio, the nonprofit life sciences trade group, is looking to address the funding gap by adding more investors to its board and attending national investment conferences. The intrigue: Raley discussed how
