A new head coach and plenty of new faces do not disrupt the winning ways of Throckmorton girls’ golf.

At the start of the year, Olivia Fauntleroy, Brylei Gage and Syndee Koonsman needed two additional players to keep the state streak alive.

“Honestly, I wasn’t sure I would even make it to regionals because we had two new people,” said junior Sydnee Koonsman. “Took a lot of convincing out of both of them.”

“We had two girls joined us, really stepped up this year because we needed those fourth and fifth players,” said senior Olivia Fauntleroy. “It’s just it’s been a great year.”

Knowing they wanted to get back to state, Fauntleroy, Koonsman, and Gage made sure to assist their new teammates in any way they could.

“All three of them have helped me because they know what they’re doing and they know how to tweak your stroke if you don’t do it right,” said senior Matilyn Lowery. “They’ve really helped me during practice.”

“Very stressful, but my teammates have helped me calm down and really learned the things,” said freshman Kaylee Woods.

Rudy Leal inherited a strong core of golfers and isn’t surprised they’re traveling back to state. Throckmorton heads into the match as an underdog.

“Three of our girls never shot their best scores at regional, so we’re really hoping that they can improve if we can get those girls alone, we can drop 30 to 40 strokes off our score, and I think we’ll be in contention,” said head coach Rudy Leal.

While happy with the seventh place finish in 2021 and 2023, this year’s squad has hopes of duplication the 2003 lady hounds — which returned to Throckmorton with gold medals.
