Fresno is littered with empty pharmacy buildings. Some have new tenants with plans
Drive anywhere around the Fresno area and you’ll eventually see an empty chain pharmacy. It’s been a year since Rite Aid filed for bankrtuptcy and closed more than 2,000 stores — 17 of them in the San Joaquin Valley. And at least seven locations of CVS and Walgreens have closed in Fresno alone. So what’s happening with those stores? Some have new renters that haven’t moved in yet. Keep reading to find out who — including a new business that wants to move into the Rite Aid on the edge of the Tower District. Some are in the final stages of negotiating with renters or new buyers. And some are still sitting empty. These buildings are challenging to fill. Despite being in prime locations on busy corners, they are an odd size and shape, said Russ Moroz, managing director of investments for commercial real estate investment brokerage Marcus & Millichap , which does business in Fresno. They’re too big for fast food or other restaurants. Too small for regular grocery stores or big retail chains. Too short for the growing trend of kids indoor play centers , and usually lack the loading dock needed for showrooms selling kitchen tile or

Fresno teen collected 450 Halloween animatronics; think scary clowns. Where to see them
Lucas Antonio is lost somewhere in a maze of clowns. There are a dozen, or more, set up at the entrance of the Fresno Fright Nights, the Halloween attraction that opened at Island Water Park this month. The contorted bodies are dressed in stripes and polka dots, bright shocks of colored hair atop plastic white faces with wide-smiles of monster teeth. Plug them in and the animatronics come to laughing, snarling life. “They’re all their own characters, with their own names,” says Antonio, an 18-year-old “Halloween enthusiast” who helps design and equip haunted attractions with a collection of scary animatronics that numbers in the hundreds. “They are just so basic and goofy, and I just have to have every single one of them,” he says of the clowns, which are designed and marketed through a company called Seasonal Visions International. Antonio has been collecting nearly his whole life and turned what had been a neighborhood haunt in his front yard into to a year-round gig. He has a partnership with Fresno Fright Nights, but also helped open Scare Factory in Fresno in 2024 and is senior director and specialist manager with the company ElsewhereFX, which tours pop-up Halloween attractions across

The countdown to Cowhide is ON! We’re catching up with sophomores, juniors, and seniors to get their take on one of the most exciting day of this year. This week will be packed with so many exciting and fun activities, all leading up to cowhide, the highlight of fall for most Redwood students. ASB has been working around the clock to make this happen, and it all leads up to this moment. Kadence Hetherington, ‘28, the ASB spirit coordinator, said that ASB started working on Cowhide about two weeks ago. It was difficult to balance, “because we still had to deal with [the] pink out game and [the] minions game…those are our priorities first since they come first.”

Isabel Bayrakdarian plans a triumphant Fresno return for a special Keyboard concert. You can win a pair of tickets to Friday’s event.
For Isabel Bayrakdarian, the most profound part of her upcoming concert at St. Paul Armenian Church will be her connection with her ancestors and with the audience. “I have a picture of me with my great grandmother, who was part of the mass deportation and survived the genocide,” said Bayrakdarian. “At one point, I looked at the photo and thought ‘Oh my gosh, she was me. She was also an 8 month old on her great grandmother’s lap. What did she sing? What was she like, since we were both named the same? What songs did she sing as a child? Some of them are songs she sang to her children, which got passed on to me. All of this immediate chain to the past was created only through song.”

LA matcha, gelato chain opens anticipated first Central Valley space in Clovis
To get something from Matsu Matcha , Central Valley residents previously had to travel hours to one of the brand’s several Los Angeles locations. As of Sunday, they just need to drive to Clovis . Matsu Matcha, an LA-based matcha chain with locations in Little Tokyo and Koreatown, opened its first Central Valley location at 1195 Herndon Ave., Unit 102. The grand opening came months after signs first went up, and the new shop created more excitement by running several contests on Instagram and Facebook. Together, it meant the first few days were extremely busy, with lines out the door even as the drinks and gelato came out at a quick pace. Several items on the menu were already sold out, and Mackenzy Yang, the manager of Matsu Matcha, said that it was all hands on deck to deal with the level of demand. “Every employee has been running around the whole time,” Yang said. There are no cashiers in the shop; instead, there are two ordering screens where people can choose what drink (or dessert) they want, the level of sweetness and any extras they might want to include, like matcha jelly. Employees behind the counter hand out samples
