Aiken's Weeks legacy lives on in farms, gardens, with new leadership
AIKEN — Several "big boxes" are firmly in place around Aiken County with such offerings as pet food, gardening tools, bird seed, hay bales and seasonal plants, and at least one small, local establishment has been focused on those areas for decades. Weeks Farm and Garden Supply reportedly dates back "70-plus years" (estimates vary), and it's undergone a generational change this year, with ownership passing from the late Marvin Williams to his son, Jim. The establishment at 1718 Richland Ave. is familiar territory for the new owner, a nephew of Ray Weeks (1909-83), who founded the business and r...

Aiken County underwent a reassessment this year, and rising home values are contributing to the proposed increase, though in actual terms the millage rate would decline. Business, industry and civic leaders gathered downtown at the Pinnacle Club for the ninth stop of the 18-city Build Georgia roundtable tour, sharing feedback with U.S. Rep. Rick Allen and Georgia Republican Party Chairman Josh McKoon in a gathering closed to media. Hitting the gas: Why Georgia drivers could pay less at the pump through October "It's been a really good conversation, just like today, and a lot of recurring themes," McKoon said after the meeting. How do employers find more employees? How can students emerge from high school workforce-ready? "Some of it is talking about public policy that's already in place, but some of it is definitely saying, 'Hey, where do we need to be doing better?' Help us identify the issues that we need to go back to your elected officials and say, 'This is what people in Augusta, Richmond and Columbia counties
