Established in 1984 by former President Ronald Reagan, National Correctional Officers Week is celebrated annually during the first full week of May. This year, that week will be May 5 to 11. Night Work: Rockland utility pole, house damage forces power outage for some
ROCKLAND — A passerby was first in reporting a single-vehicle crash at 126 Pleasant Street, in Rockland, on May 3, 2024, but the homeowner was close behind. According to responding police officers, the occupants of the house heard two large bangs before venturing outside at approximately 1:15 a.m., and finding a corner of the house damaged, one of their cars scraped up, and pieces of a utility pole swinging haphazardly. The house itself is set back further from the road than its neighbors.
Jane’s Walk in Camden a Success
Camden’s “Jane’s Walk” visited four of the dam sites on Megunticook River, Saturday, May 4, 2024. The walk showed a dramatic waterfall at each site except at Montgomery Dam. There has been an ongoing debate about the future of these dams and their waterfalls. This walk was led by volunteer members of “Save the Dam Falls,” which is offering a counter-argument to the Town of Camden’s campaign to remove the dams, millponds, and waterfalls, particularly the spectacular Montgomery Falls at the head of the harbor.
911 calls in Knox County now being answered by KRCC staff after eight months
ROCKLAND – Knox Regional Communications Center returned to a fully independent emergency telecommunications operation on May 1, 2024, at approximately 9:30 a.m. For eight and a half months, Waldo County fielded the KRCC’s 911 calls, transferring information electronically to the staff in Rockland, 24/7, while Knox County administrators scrambled to repopulate a severally dwindled dispatch employee roster. With a recent rebound in filled positions, and a final sign off by authorizing agencies, KRCC is back to fulfilling all aspects of the job. The contract with Waldo County still has 28 days left, which will act as a bit of a cushion in case something goes “glitchy” with the electronics, according to Gordon Page, Interim Knox County Administrator.
