Red Bluff rejects food truck park plan for now
The Red Bluff Planning Commission has decided not to move forward with rules that would allow a permanent or semi-permanent food truck park in the city — but that doesn't mean food trucks are off the table. Commissioners are interested in piloting food trucks at special events first, which could help gauge public demand and determine whether a larger food truck facility would be worth pursuing down the road.

Anselmo Vineyards holding unpermitted events? Redding cafe update
It’s been nearly a dozen years since Reverge Anselmo sold his winery, restaurant and surrounding property in the Inwood Valley east of Redding. What’s happened on the property since the sale is kind of a mystery — through the former winery and surrounding property has recently been back on Shasta County's radar. Anselmo Vineyards still has a website. But the number for the winery and restaurant is disconnected. There is a general number listed for information on its wedding venue and events. I left a message. I’m still waiting to hear back. Shasta County Assistant Resource Management Director Lio Salazar recently told me his office received a complaint on the property that they are looking into. “The Department of Resource Management has received a complaint alleging events being held at the property without permits; making wine, serving food, etc. and operating without a food facility permit. The complaint is currently under investigation,” Salazar said in an email. He declined to say who lodged the complaint. “With respect to the code enforcement process, information, including name, contact information, and/or other information related to the identity … is held confidential except as may be required to be disclosed by court order,” Salazar

'Redding's little Cheers bar.' Wine down at Grape Escape
The Grape Escape wine bar in downtown Redding is the type of casual hangout where new customers aren’t strangers for long. Owners Adam Browning and Kayla Hatch have created a welcoming atmosphere for wine lovers since they took over the business in May 2020 at the corner of South and Pine streets. Nicknamed The Grape, it’s an award-winning community bar and spot to have some food to go along with glasses of full-bodied cabernet sauvignon, a crisp pinot grigio and more drink choices. “A lot of people come in and say it's kind of like Redding's little Cheers bar,” Browning said. “It's just a place where you're greeted at the door (with), ‘Hey, how you doing?’ Maybe a hug and a handshake. And pretty much by the time you leave here, you're going to know somebody,” he added. “Come as strangers, leave as friends,” is how Hatch describes the experience. The couple say they get a lot of travelers, many of whom say they plan to return the next time they’re in town. “They’re like, ‘We gotta come back in here,’” Browning said. The Grape offers regional wines The Grape is only open three evenings a week — Thursday, Friday

Redding indoor pickleball courts move forward. New burger joint opens
More than a year ago, Kendall Bachman of the Redding Pickleball Club told me that they had hoped to open inside courts by this year and that their preferred location was next to Grange Co-op in the Raley’s shopping center on Lake Boulevard. The club hasn't opened. But recently, a state California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control application was posted at the site. The licensee is Redding Pickleball, a limited liability corporation whose managing member is Dennis Shepard. Bachman and three others are also members in the LLC. The application is for a license to serve beer at the club. Shepard told me they are optimistic Redding Pickleball Club will open in January or February. The club will be open seven days a week. Shepard said more details about the club, including a website, will be shared in about a month. They have been working on the project for more than two years. With an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 pickleball players in the North State, Shepard thinks the indoor club will be a popular attraction. Bachman told me last year that the group had looked at the former Big Lots building on Hilltop Drive and the old Joann Fabrics on

New Social Kitchen restaurant honors a family legacy
Martin Rios Jr., co-owner and chef of the new Social Kitchen in Palo Cedro, can tell when his customers enjoy their meals. “When I see a plate coming back empty, that’s my reward,” he said. “That means the people like the food.” Chef Martin (pronounced mar-TEEN) must be seeing a lot of clean plates lately. The family-owned restaurant, an offshoot of the Casa Rios Grill in nearby Redding, has been providing praise-worthy breakfast and lunch dishes for about three months now. “The servers, they always say, "Everybody loves your food, Martin,’” he said. Rios is humble about the compliments he receives. But the high marks aren’t surprising considering he’s been working in local restaurant kitchens and learning from other chefs for nearly 30 years. “I'm not saying I'm the best at what I do. … I cook (food) the way I would eat it myself,” he said. “I'm always hard on myself because I always strive for perfection.” The Social Kitchen, the former location of the Farmhouse Cafe, can seat about 60 guests inside and another 20 on two patios. It’s best to get there early, especially on the weekends when it’s the busiest. Rios and his brother came up

Trader Joe's fans from Eureka, Redding, Mt Shasta favor these 10 items
Dark chocolate, Asian fusion and crunchy snacks rank high among top groceries customers at Trader Joe’s in Redding carry out the door. Most popular items are foods under the specialty grocery store’s brand, said Redding store manager Steve Schaarschmidt. High on the list are snacks that require no preparation, and microwaveable frozen foods that taste like carry-out restaurant meals but are less expensive. With the second closest Trader Joe’s store in Chico, customers from Red Bluff to south Siskiyou County visit Redding's TJ’s to shop the store chain's exclusive products, Schaarschmidt said, and seasonal customers return each year when they visit Lake Shasta, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area and other natural landmarks. “We see quite a bit” of customers who say they're from Mount Shasta and Eureka. “There’s no Trader Joe’s on the coast north of Santa Rosa, so people make a trip and shop for all their friends,” he said. If it seems odd people would drive 140 miles from the Humboldt County coast to visit Trader Joe's in Redding, consider the store's grocery cult status . The Monrovia-based chain's core customers are " not just satisfied, but bordering on fanatic," Forbes reported. Customers placed Trader Joe's at the top
