Continuity in political process important
Our political conventions to choose candidates for November 5 presidential elections are under way. The world is watching, and nearly always is interested when the United States goes through its political process. It would be more beneficial if we had three strong candidates for office rather than two, however, not all countries are free to choose their government leaders. We withstand the occasional ripple of deviation from free and fair elections, however, ordinarily the process is smooth and reflects the cherished democratic process. It has been a hallmark since the early elections in 1792 when George Washington was elected president. In those critical years of development when the political leaders were meeting in Philadelphia, pivotal leader and intellectual, Benjamin Franklin, was asked by an interested citizen what kind of government the new country had formed. Franklin, in his wisdom, was famously quoted as responding, “We have a republic, if you can keep it.”
Reader’s Voice: Her theme: Mighty Joe Way to Go
Some of my friends say both presidential candidates are too old, Joe Biden, 81; Donald Trump, 78. Some political pundits say president Biden can’t deliver the Democratic message forcefully. He delivers the message with action, instead: First thing in 2020, Biden got the coronavirus pandemic under control by passing the American Rescue Plan to send $1,400 to low-to-medium income folks for basic necessities (that helped me, how about you?), extended a $300 per week unemployment benefit for 9.7 million out-of-work-people, expanded child tax credit program which Republicans later would not renew, and money for small business loans and grants for education agencies.

Her call: Put American hero on the ticket
Following what might be the most selfless act in the history of American politics, there is a space on the Democratic Party ticket in the upcoming election. I have a suggestion for filling it. Saturday we were having lunch with my son, Alex, in Peoria. He asked whether I thought...
Rules, procedures, apply for political party nominees
The League of Women Voters of the United States, as a member organization of the National Task Force on Election Crises, released the following statement on the Democratic Party’s replacing its presumptive presidential nominee:. “While a major party’s presumptive nominee withdrawing his presidential candidacy is an extraordinary occurrence, rules...
Unconventional thoughts on our political conventions
I didn’t watch much of the GOP convention because I pretty much knew what would take place. Also, it was on too soon after dinner for me to take a chance on not keeping my meat loaf down. Wisconsin governor Tony Evers had nothing good to say about it. Listening to all the speakers glorifying Donad Trump, with him and his bandaged ear garnering sympathy, was a bit more than I could attempt to digest. The speakers heaping accolades on him were the same ones, such as flip-floppers Vance and Haley, who not long ago were comparing him to Hitler and stating that he would destroy democracy as we know it. I mainly wanted to hear the supposedly new kinder, gentler Trump speak. When he did, it was something to behold. We didn’t get the same old Trump; we got the same old Trump with a bandaged ear. It’s a bit odd that the day after he dodged a bullet, he was out playing golf with a bandage-free ear, but the bandage was back in place when he made an appearance at the convention. I will give him credit for remembering which ear to put on the bandage.
Recipe of the Week: Macaroni Salad
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the macaroni, and cook until tender, about 8 minutes. 2. In a large bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, mustard, salt and pepper. Stir in the onion, celery, green pepper, carrot, pimentos, and macaroni. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving.
Individuality
Examine all your freedoms, speech, religion, voice,. It all comes down to individuality. If you believe in God, or not, that’s choice. If you’re allowed to speak your mind, that’s voice. Combine those two, and recognize the plea. That everything is individuality!. © Richard Williams.
Prince Castle burgers and shakes in Aurora
Last week we made it to Lake Street in Aurora in the recapture of businesses in Aurora in past years. Just one-half block from Lake Street, on West New York Street, on the south side, was another Prince Castle restaurant with burger and one-in-a million shakes. South on Lake Street,...
Surprises continue to dominate in MLB
After watching the Chicago White Sox struggle the first part of this season, there were observers who thought the team might pick up the pace following the all-star break. Although few, if any, nobody envisioned the Sox stringing together a long winning streak, the more optimistic Sox’ backers harbored the hope that the White Sox would show signs of an awakening. If the three games in Kansas City last weekend were any indication what to expect the rest of the campaign, the remainder of the this season might be worse than what the first part.
