Purdue facing complaint for animal welfare violations
A research watchdog is urging fines against Purdue for three animal welfare violations discovered in a June inspection, an analyst for the organization said. A copy of the inspection report was obtained from the USDA by the watchdog organization SAEN, and the report gives 410 S. University St. as the address of the inspection.
Lafayette hospitals recognized for heart disease and stroke treatment
Two area hospitals received high honors for their efforts to adhere to American Heart Association guidelines in 2023. Franciscan Health Lafayette East was given the top honor in the American Heart Association’s “Get with the Guidelines” heart failure prevention program, and Indiana University Health Arnett, in also in Lafayette, received Gold Plus for the Stroke Award.

Pilot dead after crop duster crashes near Oxford
One person was killed after a crop duster crashed in a field southwest of the town of Oxford, Benton County Coroner Matt Rosenberger said Tuesday. Originally reported down about 6:45 p.m. Monday, the plane has been identified as a single-engine crop duster that crashed while working near County Road 200 East.

WL man faces drug, gun charges after police called to local park
A 29-year-old local man faces three criminal charges after police responded to a call of an occupied vehicle in Happy Hollow Park after it was closed for the night. In the early morning hours Wednesday, police made contact with four people in the vehicle. As a result of the investigation, Dakota Lee Fields, of 506 Trace 5, West Lafayette, was charged with one felony, unlawful carrying of a handgun, and two misdemeanors, possession of paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, according to documents filed by the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office on July 17.

Thrifting 4 decades
Hidden in a basement on the side of West State Street, Amused Clothing was founded by a former Purdue student who fell in love with thrifting nearly 40 years ago. “When I was still a student, I was looking for a place off-campus to live. And so I found some people that could help,” said Robert Krusinski, owner of the store. “One of these people was this woman who taught me the ins and outs of thrift shopping.”
Lafayette duo allegedly found with loaded handguns, charged with dealing meth
A Lafayette man and woman were arrested on July 6 after police allegedly found them with 17.65 grams of methamphetamine, according to an affidavit filed by prosecutors. A Lafayette police officer recognized Richard Patrick Ruhlander, 37, driving a vehicle and Jennifer E. Chadd, 44, in the passenger seat on North Ninth Street in Lafayette.
