‘Impassable' flooding from pounding rain is swamping South Florida suburbs

Heavy rain this week has turned parts of Broward County into a watery maze, swallowing roadways, stranding cars in flooded parking lots and sending water into homes and buildings as people waded through deep floodwaters. Over the past four days the highest rainfall totaled about 13 to 15 inches between Weston and Sunrise, George Rizzuto, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Miami, said Wednesday. But there’s good news coming: The rain will taper off Wednesday afternoon, and drier air and sunny skies are moving in Thursday through the weekend, he said. Other parts of Florida, including Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, have been hit with 15 to 20 inches of rain that has flooded roads and submerged cars. The torrent neared the state’s single-day rainfall record, according to ABC News. According to the Florida Today news site on the Space Coast, National Weather Service officials described the flooding as a “one-in-1,000-year event .” Brevard County sheriff’s deputies helped more than 100 people caught in rising waters while driving to work or running errands, according to the news outlet. ‘Get Used to It’: Florida Residents Sound Off as Rising Floodwaters Swamp Fort Lauderdale Streets

While we tend to get used to many things in our states, there are a few that can still be concerning, especially when they seem to get worse every year. One example is what’s happening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where residents are dealing with flooded streets following heavy rainfall. While some people are shocked to see parts of the city underwater, a few locals claim this is nothing out of the ordinary and something people should probably get used to by now.

King tides, rain are flooding South Florida. What are we doing about it?

Historic, chart-topping king tides submerged South Florida last week, flooding more places deeper and longer than they’d ever seen before. This week, double-digit rainfall filled in the blanks, swamping inland and coastal areas. South Florida is soggy, and all the science says its only going to get worse. That’s bad news for anyone who lives in, works in, owns property in, visits or even passes through South Florida. So, millions of people. But In response, local governments have poured hundreds of millions into solutions over the last few years. Keeping dry for the next decade alone would take billions more — if not tens of billions. They’re elevating roads, buffing up stormwater pumps and replacing drainage pipes with new ones so big an NBA player could walk upright in them. They’re converting golf courses into part-time flood parks to soak up neighborhood drainage. They’re raising seawalls. And the projects appear to be working. Tiffany Troxler, director of science at Florida International University’s Sea Level Solutions Center, said she’s seen projects in Miami neighborhoods that have drastically cut down on flooding. “That’s a really positive sign. We need more of that,” she said. “Without more adaptation projects, we’ll continue to see
