Suni Sands site's future goes before Jupiter council Thursday

(This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccuracy.) Jupiter will take its first step toward allowing development on the Suni Sands property at a special Town Council meeting on Thursday, Oct. 29. The 10-acre property along the Loxahatchee River is one of the last open sites along Jupiter's waterfront, and studies have found it contains artifacts from indigenous people who lived there as long as 5,000 years ago. Its future has long been a topic of debate. In January, the town and the property owner, Charles Modica, reached a settlement that could give the town ownership of more than half of the site, which would be preserved for the public, if the development is approved. Through the settlement agreement, the site’s 4.07-acre midden and railroad right-of-way would be deeded to the town if development is approved. The town also has the option to purchase the 1.4-acre view corridor at the northwest corner of the site, overlooking the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, for $10.5 million if the development is approved, according to a town spokesperson. The council will consider changes to town rules governing what Modica, the developer behind the Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street complex near the

Grandview Heights sues Palm Beach County over Related Ross hotel deal

WEST PALM BEACH — Grandview Heights has marked the southern edge of downtown West Palm Beach for more than a century. Its one- and two-story homes preserve a piece of the city’s early history, so much so that the neighborhood was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Now residents are taking Palm Beach County to court over a deal that would put an 18-story, 400-room convention center hotel within 45 feet of some of their homes. The Grandview Heights Neighborhood Association and the West Palm Beach Neighborhood Alliance are seeking an injunction to stop the deal from moving forward. They allege county commissioners improperly rushed through a complex agreement with Related Ross, the development company controlled by Palm Beach billionaire Stephen Ross, without giving the public adequate time to review a deal involving millions of dollars in public money. Under the agreement, the county will purchase the land for $26 million from his general fund reserves, acquire the completed hotel and lease it back to a Related affiliate for as long as 97 years. The updated roster's first meeting will be Nov. 3. The appointees will fill the seats left vacated by former commissioners Marilyn Beuttenmuller, Jorge Sanchez, Martin Klein, Victoria Donaldson and Ailey, with his ascension to a regular member position.
