Hurricanes pick up first on-field win in April

April did not start kind for the Coral Shores High baseball team as two of its four games were forfeited to the Hurricanes, while the two on-field contests resulted in losses, but that was turned around on Tuesday, April 16, with a 9-1 victory at Somerset Silver Palms in Miami.

Ensuring his team was going to pick up the on-field win, Campbell Lavoie would allow just one run, despite giving up nine hits, during his six innings of work from the hill as he struck out six and the offense did the rest from there collecting 13 hits as a unit for the eight-run victory. Blasting a two-run first-inning home run was Donovan Thiery, bringing in A.J. Puetti, who singled to open the game. Zeke Myers added to the home run fest with a solo shot in the third, then, in the third, he tripled home Thiery, who also connected on an RBI triple that sent home Grady Temkin after he reached via a double and Mikol Bonito-Rodriguez singled in the at-bat for a 6-1 lead.

For good cause, Coral Shores touched home three more times in the seventh on hits by Riley O’Berry, Myers, Lavoie — his second of the game — and Thiery, who then closed out the win in the bottom of the seventh from the mound, striking out two with just one runner reaching via a walk.

Coral Shores plays just once more this week at home, on Friday, April 19, against Chaminade-Madonna with the first pitch at Founders Park scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
