What was that loud bang in Taunton area Thursday night? Here's what we know so far

TAUNTON — What went boom last night in the greater Taunton region?

The Taunton Daily Gazette looked into reports of residents in the Taunton area hearing a loud boom Thursday night. Multiple people posted on social media about hearing what sounded like an explosion and getting frightened or even feeling their homes shaking, not just in Taunton, but nearby communities like Raynham, Dighton, Lakeville and Berkley, as well.

Taunton Fire Chief Steven Lavigne told the Gazette that a call came into dispatch about an explosion. He said a fire Engine and police did go out to investigate at Paul Bunker Drive, off Ingell Street last night but there was no evidence of any explosion or fire occurring.

“We don’t know where it came from,” said Lavigne, who heard the “boom” sound Thursday night himself.

What do police say?

A call came in at around 8 p.m. Thursday night for an explosive device, put police reported it as a firecracker, and there was no indication of any device larger or stronger, or there being any threat to the public, according to the Taunton Police Public Information and Records Access Department.

What about TMLP?

Taunton Municipal Light Plant spokesperson Sonja Britland said there were no reports of any transformers or any other TMLP infrastructure exploding.

“It was not related to TMLP. Nothing to report on our end,” Britland said?

What about Berkley, Dighton, Lakeville, Middleboro and Raynham?

Other nearby communities either couldn’t be reached for comment or had no information to share.

Dispatch for Lakeville Police and Berkley Police reported no calls from the public or information regarding an explosion.

Dispatch for Middleboro Fire and Dighton Police did not immediately respond to inquiries.

Raynham Fire Chief Bryan LaCivita said “all was quiet” Thursday night and no calls or reports of an explosion came through dispatch.

What about State Police and State Fire Marshal?

Public Relations for the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said there was no information to provide and they didn’t receive any reports or calls from local public safety departments to investigate a loud explosion in the region.

Media Communications for the Massachusetts State Police had not responded to inquiries as of Friday afternoon?
