Vic's Ice Cream whitewashes mural, causing online backlash in Sacramento neighborhood
Maren Conrad said it was unfortunate a mural she’d painted outside Vic’s Ice Cream in 2021 was painted over Tuesday morning, leaving a blank white wall. But her biggest gripe was a claim that Vic’s made on Instagram that it had attempted to contact her. “I don’t have a single missed phone call, missed voicemail, missed text message, missed email,” Conrad said in a phone interview Wednesday morning. “I mean, I’m not a hard person to get a hold of.” The landmark Land Park ice cream shop – which reopened in January following a change in ownership after the death of longtime owner Craig Rutledge – painted over Conrad’s mural that adorned the outer wall of Brew Bird, a cafe that shares a building with Vic’s. Jason Williams, a hairstylist working across the street Tuesday evening said that the whitewashing happened around 10 a.m. Work that Conrad created across the street as part of the same project appears to have been untouched. But even just the destruction of one mural was enough to cause a stir online. “It took months of planning and thousands of dollars to bring this incredible mural to (Land Park),” wrote Jennifer Madriago-Benton, owner of Artisan

Metalcore takes over Roseville’s All Hollow’s Eve costume party
The Sacramento music scene has many characteristics that delineate it from the attitudes of the coast. Rather than the NorCal scene looking like Los Angeles, where artists-turned-products aggressively salivate to be the next breakout stars, Sacramento embraces music devoid of egotistical endeavors. On most evenings at some venues, audiences will encounter musicians in different stages of their careers playing for enjoyment, instead of playing with the hope of captivating an A&R representative.

The best pork on Sacramento's plates comes from this regenerative ranch in Ione
Currently, Magpie Cafe is offering a dish of pork belly with pears, frisee, pickled onions and a sweet-spicy glaze. The fat on the pork belly is rich and unctuous; the meat is tender with a nutty flavor. Not all pork is created equal. How and where the hogs are raised, and what they eat, informs the final food product. This particular hog was raised at PT Ranch in Ione, about an hour southeast of Sacramento in Amador County. Run by Emily and Ned Taylor, PT Ranch is a regenerative ranch that raises pork, lamb, turkey and chicken. “PT Ranch started when my dad bought it when he was in college. That was in the mid ‘50s, and he had all these aspirations of raising bulls. About 15 years ago, we took over the management of PT Ranch, and really wanted to change practices, and that’s when we decided to get into the pastured meat business and follow a regenerative-style farming as best as we could,” Emily Taylor said Regenerative ranching is a land stewardship practice that strives for sustainability through soil restoration, water conservation and biodiversity. The practice relies on five main principles: no soil tilling, no spraying, rotational grazing,

Progressive streamer Hasan Piker joins Mai Vang at Sacramento canvassing rally
The Sacramento chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America saw record turnout at a canvassing event for congressional candidate Mai Vang Wednesday night, thanks in part to a celebrity appearance. Hasan Piker, a left-wing streamer and divisive political commentator, took the Southside Park stage in Sacramento on Wednesday afternoon to rally support for Vang in her bid to unseat longtime incumbent Doris Matsui for the 7th Congressional District seat. Over the course of two livestreams, including one Wednesday, Piker has helped raise $91,000 for Vang’s campaign. “I’m really honored to be here on this stage with two wonderful people, but also in front of hundreds of people who are going to shape the destiny of the California Democratic Party and perhaps the rest of the country, if not the world,” Piker said. Piker’s popularity among young left-leaning voters has propelled him beyond the internet and into the national spotlight as a prominent voice on the American left. The Twitch streamer has thrown his weight behind several progressive candidates and DSA members seeking congressional seats in the 2026 midterm elections. Before his stop in Sacramento, Piker joined Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn, at a sold-out campaign event in Minnesota. He has also
