Two teens were arrested this week in connection with an attempted home burglary in Surprise during which one of the suspects was shot, police said.

Officer responded just after 4 a.m. April 22 to a home near 140th Avenue and Waddell Road after a homeowner called to report a possible break-in.

A short time later, the same homeowner reported shooting at the intruders and that information was followed by another 911 call reporting a person was found with a gunshot wound about a block away from the home.

After checking on the homeowner’s welfare, police found a suspect, 19-year-old Kason Nelson, who was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Officers also found a second suspect, a teenage juvenile.

Detectives investigating the case said they learned the homeowner involved is renting to a tenant who knows the suspects.

“The suspects told investigators, under Miranda Warnings, that they came to visit the tenant. However, Surprise police detectives, with assistance from the K-9 unit, located a firearm and other items indicating the suspects were intending to commit a burglary,” authorities stated in a release.

Nelson is a prohibited possessor, police said, and was booked on one count each of first-degree burglary, misconduct involving weapons and theft.

The juvenile was booked into the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Center on one count of second-degree burglary.
