No sidewalk riding: Miami passes new e-bike, scooter rules.
The city of Miami is cracking down on e-bikes and motorized scooters, setting new speed limits, age minimums and sidewalk rules. Why it matters: Miami is the latest city in Miami-Dade County to regulate motorized micromobility vehicles, including e-bikes and scooters, due to pedestrian safety concerns. In 2024, Key Biscayne banned micromobility devices following the death of a pedestrian. In the past year, Miami Beach , Doral and Sunny Isles Beach passed their own rules governing helmet use, age minimums and sidewalk riding. This summer , the University of Miami also banned e-bikes and e-scooters from its Coral Gables campus. The latest: Miami commissioners approved new rules Oct. 22 that ban riders younger than 16 years old, prohibit riding on sidewalks except when parking and set a 20-mph speed limit ( Some e-bikes go as fast as 28 mph). Riders can't park on sidewalks except in designated areas and must carry ID. Violators could face a $100 fine. Miami Police Chief Edwin Lopez says officers will try educating the public first, but will turn to fines as a "last resort" if needed, according to Local 10 . Yes, but: Cities need Miami-Dade approval to restrict e-bikes and scooters on county-owned
