Seeking sun—and fun—in Punta Gorda? Yup! Found it!
I’ve probably driven past Punta Gorda a hundred times since I first moved to the Gulf Coast of Florida in 1987 but have to admit I’ve rarely had reason to pull off the road. All that changed last year when Allegiant Airlines opened the $800 million “Sunseeker Resort on Charlotte Harbor.”
Mookie: The Unexpected Joy
The year 2021 was a challenging one for many, but for me, it was particularly challenging. In the midst of the global pandemic, I was also battling prostate cancer, undergoing radiation treatments that left me both physically and emotionally drained. I hadn’t had a dog in nine years, and with my history of owning big dogs, the thought of getting another seemed distant. But fate, it seems, had other plans for me, and they came in the form of a small, furry bundle of joy named Mookie.

Sammy Hagar Shows There’s More Than One Way to Rock in Tampa
Rain rolling in before showtime was not going to ruin Red Rocker Sammy Hagar’s “Best of All Worlds Tour” party at the Mid-Florida Amphitheatre on Sunday night! Unfortunately, on this 2nd show of the tour opening act Loverboy had to be cancelled due to the storm and traffic congestion arriving late at the venue. Sammy waited till 8:45 to hit the stage and the crowd of over 12,000 braved the rain and were ready. Kicking it off with “Good Enough,” from the VH 1986 album “5150”, Sammy and company took it next to 1991’s “Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” with the fan popular “Poundcake.” Joe “Satch” Satriani channeling Eddie Van Halen’s guitar riffs. Satriani is not Eddie Van Halen and he is not trying to be, he is paying tribute & respect to Eddie’s work. Joe has his own style and is one of our best rock guitarists.
Shop Local North Port Market Open Every Saturday
It used to be that if you lived in North Port and wanted a great farmer’s market or a nice dinner with outdoor music you had to travel to Sarasota or Punta Gorda. It was a fair trade off for the then affordable housing found in our area. Having lived in the same home in North Port for 20 years, we have watched our small town grow and stretch beyond US41 in ways not imagined. Not one, but now two emerging Sarasota Memorial Hospital options in North Port is one of those items that long seemed impossible. A plethora of new businesses, including several restaurants that are standing the test of time make dining out in your own neighborhood a joy. Another true gem of our little city’s growth is the new Shop Local North Port Market. Facebook Folks, this farmer’s market is the real deal! Fresh produce, meats, seafood, baked goods, wonderful soaps and candles, food trucks, and live music are on the agenda. And it’s growing weekly with a waitlist of local businesses wanting in.
