Looking back: This week in eastern Idaho history
100 years agoA.H. Haines, of Hailey, found himself in the Bonneville County Jail this week in 1923 after leading Sheriff C.E. Criddle and one of his deputies on a wild chase through the lava beds between Firth and Blackfoot. According to the report from the Salt Lake Tribune, the chain of events began early the morning of Sept. 23 when Haines was alleged to have stolen a wagon, saddle and harness from L.B. Wilde of Iona. “The matter was not reported at the sheriff’s office until nearly noon Sunday, and by that time all trace of the man’s whereabouts was well covered. Another report came into the sheriff’s office Monday morning, however, from W.P. Dial of Shelley that a double harness had been taken from his ranch that morning. Acting upon the idea that both thefts had been committed by the same person, Deputy Sheriff Simpkins immediately set out over the desert road, accompanied by Sheriff Criddle. Between Firth and Blackfoot they came upon Haines with the alleged stolen articles in his possession.”
