New Tacoma speed cameras caught 400,000 drivers in a month. Vendor can't keep up
It’s Tacoma roulette on the city streets. New speed cameras at Norpoint Way and Marine View Drive in Northeast Tacoma photographed almost 400,000 drivers exceeding the corridor’s 40 mph speed limit between Sept. 14 and Oct. 11, according to city data. After a month-long warning period for the two cameras ended on Oct. 14, the city will now begin mailing out citations. But because of limitations from the company that runs the cameras, only a randomly selected group of 100 registered vehicle owners per camera each day will receive them, city officials say. In total, approximately 515,000 vehicles drove through the corridor in the same period, meaning that roughly 77% were speeding. On average, the cameras photographed slightly more than 14,000 speeders daily. Vehicles that exceed a certain speed threshold will now be chosen, at random, to be among the group that receives citations, said Eric Huesby, a manager in the city’s environment and public works department, which operates the program. The city has chosen not to share that threshold publicly, he told The News Tribune in an interview, since doing so could let people know they won’t be punished for a certain level of speeding, effectively changing the limit

MORE PROPERTY ACQUISITIONS: On the agenda at tomorrow afternoon’s monthly meeting of the Sound Transit board is another round of property acquisitions for the West Seattle Link Extension project; see the list in this document. Of interest, though, is the explanation that most of the properties’ owners/tenants won’t have to relocate. Here’s what the resolution would do:

The I-5 question people keep asking about Everett light rail path construction
EVERETT — There’s a question about Sound Transit’s light rail line expansion from Lynnwood to Everett that Snohomish County Council chair, Megan Dunn, says people keep asking her. The question, Dunn, summarized, goes like this, “The question I get the most is, ‘why don’t we just go up the spine, up I-5 and go straight up (from Lynnwood) because it would be shorter and potentially cheaper?"”

That’s all about to change. And well ahead of schedule. The Washington State Department of...

More Stone Way Construction Kicks Off
Well, now there’s more work going on, but this is to actually improve the roadway itself. You may have noticed already, as it was due to kick off the weekend of October 17th. Fremont Neighbor previewed the work back in February, and we reprinted that article here under our sharing agreement. In a nutshell, the work is intended to improve the crossing points for pedestrians at N 36th Street, N 38th Street, and N Allen Place (up near Tutta Bella). (I can personally attest, as both a driver and pedestrian in those areas, that it is rather difficult for drivers to pick out folks on foot trying to cross the street.) SDOT says they are not anticipating any detours for traffic during this work. More information is available here, but the highlights are:

FOLLOWUP: More SDOT work on Wildwood Place
If you saw the cones and crews on SW Wildwood Place this morning, no, they’re not installing the protected bicycle lane yet – but this work is related. WSB contributor Anne Higuera stopped to ask. With rechannelization coming because of the bike lane/safety changes, she learned, they needed to find out how buses would navigate.
